Henry Huggins

Henry Huggins is a great book about a boy named Henry and his experiences when a stray dog, Ribsy, comes into his life. The adventures they go on, and the fun times they enjoy together make for exciting reading for middle to upper elementary learners. The activities below have been developed as a way to help students make connections to the story and enjoy it on a whole different level.

Write a Book Review

Materials: writing paper and pencils or access to a computer for writing

  • Begin with a brief review and discussion about the book.
  • Ask students to share and discuss their favorite parts of the book.
  • Put students into pairs and give each pair writing paper or access to a computer for writing.
  • Instruct each pair to write a book review. Each review must include (put these items on the board for students to reference):
    • Name of author
    • Setting and characters of the book
    • Brief summary of the story
    • Favorite part of the book
    • Recommendation for the book (why should someone read the book?)
  • Once each pair is finished, have them present their book review to the class as if giving a report on the news and trying to convince people to read Henry Huggins.
