HIV Lesson Plan for Elementary School

HIV can be a scary topic for many. With your help and this lesson plan, your students will learn what they need to know about HIV as they read and discuss a text lesson, create an HIV awareness hallway, make HIV pamphlets, and take a quiz.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define the acronym 'HIV' and give a definition for the disease
  • describe how HIV transmitted
  • explain how HIV develops into AIDS

1.5 - 2 hours

Materials

Instruction

  • Begin by telling your students that there is so much to learn about a disease that was once thought of as a death sentence. Explain to your students that they are going to learn about HIV as they read the HIV Definition & Facts: Lesson for Kids text lesson. You will read the lesson together as a class by having different students each read a paragraph in the lesson.
  • Start reading from the beginning of the lesson and then stop after reading the 'What IS HIV?' section. Ask and discuss the following:
    • What does HIV stand for?
    • What is a virus?
    • What body system does HIV attack?
    • What are CD4 cells?
  • Continue reading through the 'HIV Around the World' section. Now, ask and discuss:
    • What are the ways that HIV can be transmitted to another person?
    • Can you get HIV from hugging or shaking hands with someone?
    • How many people have HIV in the world?
    • On what continent is HIV most prevalent?
    • How did many African HIV patients get HIV?
  • Continue reading through the 'Life With HIV' section. Ask and discuss:
    • What does AIDS stand for?
    • What are the symptoms of HIV?
    • Discuss how HIV and AIDS differ.
    • What can you do to promote HIV/AIDS awareness?
  • Read the 'Lesson Summary' to your students and emphasize all major points from the lesson.
