HIV Lesson Plan for Middle School

Instructor: Dana Dance-Schissel

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

What is HIV and how can it be prevented? This lesson plan uses two fact-filled text lessons to establish a knowledge base for students. An activity in which students design a program aimed at prevention challenges them to demonstrate what they've learned.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to do the following:

  • explain what HIV is
  • discuss how HIV impacts health and wellness
  • outline the processes involved in the contraction of HIV
  • list behaviors and practices that increase the risk of contracting HIV

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.
