Think of the last time you made a substantial purchase - a computer, an item of jewelry or maybe a new car. Most likely, when you made that purchase, you asked a lot of questions, checked out various businesses and looked for the best price.

Quality assurance guarantees can enhance a customer

You probably even talked to a sales representative about a warranty, a protection agreement, an extended service plan or other measure designed to protect your investment. These types of quality assurance concepts can enhance the attractiveness of a particular product and can put a consumer's mind at ease that they will receive the quality, functional product or service they believe they're buying.

What is Quality Assurance?

Quality assurance is simply, 'developing operational controls to ensure that the results match the desired outcomes.' Quality assurance methods can relay to customers that they are purchasing a trustworthy and reliable product, with the knowledge that if something does go wrong, your business will work to make it right.

While quality assurance concepts do not always guarantee that a product or service purchased will be flawless, it can create a system that shows manufacturers care about the products they're producing and will stand behind those products, building confidence in a consumer's buying decisions.

There are a variety of ways in which quality assurance can be assigned to a product or service. Let's look at a few of the more popular quality assurance concepts.


Product grades are most commonly seen on food products, which are regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture. A product grade typically assures consumers that the 'products they buy have gone through a rigorous review process by highly-skilled graders and auditors' using official grading guidelines and processes.


While product grades and warranties are more consumer-facing, quality standards are more of an internal system of guidelines that have been 'chosen and implemented by businesses all around the world to show commitment to delivering quality products and services to customers.' Quality assurance standards are common in the medical field, manufacturing fields and other service industries.
