Reading comprehension is a crucial skill for students to learn. One way that educators can help student improve is by encouraging self-monitoring. Explore this idea and learn some techniques to teach self-monitoring for reading comprehension.

Self-Monitoring

I'm making eggs, and they're turning out…not good. They're just not good. I'm aware of this fact, and now I'm thinking about what I did wrong and how I can make adjustments next time. Yeah, see that? I'm self-monitoring, or making conscious assessments of one's own performance. Believe it or not, this skill goes beyond preparing breakfast. Self-monitoring is an important part of education. When kids learn to self-monitor, they are learning to become consciously aware of their own education, which is pretty cool when you think about it. Or should I say, when you self-monitor.

Thinking About Learning

The whole point of self-monitoring is to make students consciously aware of learning. You see, there is often a risk in education that learning can become something of an automatic process, a reflex. Why is this bad? Well, when teaching students important skills like reading, developing reflexes without thinking about them is one way that students can become engrained with bad habits. We want students to be aware of how they are learning in the classroom so they have the skills to overcome problems on their own when a teacher isn't around.
