Instructor: Artem Cheprasov

Converting between various units of data is easy! In this lesson, you will learn how to quickly convert between 10 GB and MB. You'll also learn the steps involved in converting between other values.

Steps to The Conversion

Background Information

In order to understand this conversion we need to first understand the prefixes of 'giga-' and 'mega-'. 'Giga-' is a prefix that denotes a billion of something. A billion is written as 1,000,000,000. 'Mega-' is a prefix that denotes a million of something. A million of something is written as 1,000,000.

How much larger is a billion (giga) than a million (mega)? It's 1,000 times larger:

1,000,000 x 1,000 = 1,000,000,000

Thus, a gigabyte, that is something containing 1,000,000,000 bytes, is made up of 1,000 megabytes. Since 10 GB is 10 times that number that means 10 GB contains 10,000 megabytes.

Steps

So the conversion is very simple the next time you want to convert any GB quantity to a MB quantity, simply multiply the GB quantity by 1,000:

X GB x 1,000 MB/GB = Y MB

For instance, if we want to convert 10 GB to MB we perform the following step:

10 GB x 1,000 MB/GB = 10,000 MB

Converting 10 GB To MB

The solution to converting 10 GB (gigabytes) to MB (megabytes) is fairly simple:

10 GB = 10,000 MB
