How to Convert Pints to Gallons

Instructor: Artem Cheprasov

Artem has a doctor of veterinary medicine degree.

In this lesson, you will learn how to convert from pints to gallon using the U.S. customary measurement system as well as the British Imperial measurement system.

Steps to Convert Pints to Gallons

A pint is a unit of volume in the U.S. customary system of measurements. A gallon is also a kind of unit of volume in the U.S. customary system of measurements. Converting between the two is not difficult at all.

To convert pints to gallons use the following steps:

Step 1:

Remember that:

1 pint = 0.125 gallons

Step 2:

Let's pretend you want to convert 10 pints to gallons. All you'd have to do is multiply the number of pints you have by 0.125 as follows:

10 pints x 0.125 gallons/pint

Solution

10 pints x 0.125 gallons/pint = 1.25 gallons

Important Notes and a Practical Application

So far, you've learned how to convert between using U.S. customary units. However, the pint and gallon are also units of volume in the British Imperial system of units. Remember these conversion factors in case you ever need to use them!

1 U.S. pint = 0.125 U.S. gallons

1 Imperial pint = 0.150 U.S. gallons

1 U.S. pint = 0.104 Imperial gallons

1 Imperial pint = 0.125 Imperial gallons

Application

Let's pretend that you are going on a car camping trip in the U.S. Your guide tells you that you'll need lots of water where you are going as there are no fresh sources of water in the desert! You are told to bring with you a total of 56 pints of drinking water with you for your camping trip. You rush off to the local store and notice that all they are selling the water in is half gallon sized jugs. Nowhere on the label does it tell you how many pints are in each jug. Since you're in a rush and can't get to any other store, you pull out your calculator to quickly figure out how many of these jugs of water you need.
