In the business world, an executive presence is respected and appreciated. Senior management should have developed executive presence. Today, we will learn how to develop an executive presence.

What is Executive Presence?

After being a manager for 8 years, Cathy was promoted to Senior Regional Director for Northeast Bank. Now she leads a team of 14 managers. She teaches them to lead their teams well and control losses. She also teaches them to dress professionally at all times, have drive and determination, and be strong communicators. Most importantly, she teaches them to know their stuff, which will enable them to show their teams how to complete the work, should any questions arise. This will show confidence and strength.

Other factors that contribute to developing an executive presence include:

  • Keeping offices clean, organized and uncluttered
  • Maintaining open and genuine communication
  • Speaking properly instead of in a casual manner
  • Making the effort to understand people
  • Enjoying your work
  • Having control at all times, even in the bad times
  • Earning your promotion, not having it given to you (which earns respect)
  • Not moving hands too much when speaking
  • Maintaining good posture

Examples of Executive Presence

Tim is the Executive CEO for a financial institution. When he walks through the door, everyone looks at him with admiration. He has a sense of grace, and smiles at everyone. He always has a suit on, and an answer to every question. His office is completely spotless. He has worked hard to get to an executive level. If there is an issue in the company, he talks to the staff to see what they think, giving them his full attention. He is not just a big shot, but an inspirational leader.
