Instructor: Carla Palomino
Let's learn a trick to divide by 8! Using visuals to understand division and learning a simple trick will help you solve any division problem by 8 that you can imagine. In this lesson, learn how to divide by 8 step by step.

What Does it Mean to Divide by 8?

To divide by 8 means something will be split into 8 equal groups or groups of 8 items.

You're asking how many 8's there are in your total number. Remember, we need multiplication to find this out. In this case, we need to make a times table of 8:

8 x 2 = 16 There are TWO eights in the number 16

8 x 3 = 24 There are THREE eights in the number 24

8 x 4 = 32 There are FOUR eights in the number 32

8 x 5 = 40 There are FIVE eights in the number 40

8 x 6 = 48 There are SIX eights in the number 48

Division by 8, as with division by any other number, can be understood in two ways:

1. When you divide to find the number of objects in each group. For example:

A physical education teacher is giving basketballs to his students. The teacher has 16 basketballs and 8 students. If he divides them equally, how many basketballs will he give to each student?

2. When you divide to find the number of groups. For example:

A physical education teacher has 16 basketballs. He wants to give each student 8 basketballs to be able to practice during his class. How many students will receive 8 basketballs?

Divide to find the number of objects in each group or to find the number of groups
