Grammar is a tool you can use to improve your communication skills in English. This lesson gives you a few tips that can help you take your spoken and written English to a higher level.

Importance of Grammar

What if you saw an ad that promised you could become fluent in English without understanding grammar, or a language's structure and system? Well, this type of promise would be hollow because grammar is an essential tool for improving language.

Let's begin with the formal aspect of grammar and then talk about how to improve it for both speaking and writing.

Parts of Speech

When working on improving your English grammar, make sure you know the parts of speech. These include but are not limited to:

  • Nouns: people, animals or things
  • Adjectives: words that describe a noun, such as 'smart', 'big' and 'expensive'
  • Verbs: words that express action or a state, such as 'to walk' and 'to be'

Understanding the parts of speech can help you understand their structure, or the order of words. For example, suppose you get stuck when you try to ask or answer a question in the past tense and wonder which word should come first and what verb tense you should use.

Listening and Speaking Activities

Once you understand the parts of speech, you can start improving your use of them. Below is a table that provides with you with some listening and speaking activities, including their benefits and examples.
