What to Do If You Are Being Bullied

Bullies try to make the world all about them. However, you can definitely take a stand and fight back. It doesn't matter whether you are a kid or an adult, you can be bullied, but you can also fight back. This lesson goes over some techniques to that end.

Bullying

Bullying is a kind of aggressive behavior that uses verbal and physical harm or threats of harm to cause a person to experience real or imagined powerlessness. Anyone, adults included, can be bullied, and children who are bullied can suffer consequences of bullying into adulthood. This is why it's not only important to detect bullying but also stop it.

This lesson will focus on what you can do if you are being bullied.

Bullying & Kids

Let's say you are playing with friends during recess, and a classmate comes up to you and starts verbally bullying you. This may mean they are calling you names of all sorts. There are one of two main ways you can try and stop this bullying.

  • If you think it's safe enough, you can simply tell the bully to stop. But do so in a calm and clear voice. If you do so in anger, that may only cause the bullying to worsen. If you're good at making jokes, you can also laugh the situation off. The bully doesn't expect that, and it may catch them off guard and put an end to the bullying, since they can tell they're not getting a rise out of you.
  • If, however, you feel like doing any of that is not safe or that it's too difficult for you, then you should walk away from the situation and stay away from it. Definitely don't try to fight back as it will only make things worse. Instead, find a teacher or another adult to put an end to the bullying.
