Every presentation has a number of general properties. Learn about viewing and editing basic properties of a presentation, but also about more advanced options, such as controlling access to a presentation using a password, in this video lesson.

Presentation Properties

Every presentation has a number of general properties. These include basic properties, like the size of the file and when it was last edited. However, properties can also include more advanced things, like password protection. While some of these properties are documented automatically as you work with a particular presentation, several other properties can be managed manually.

Viewing & Editing Properties

Properties of presentations can be accessed in Backstage View. To get to Backstage View from a presentation, click on File. The Info tab shows the properties of the current presentation. On the left-hand side are a number of options to protect a presentation, inspect a presentation, and manage versions. On the right-hand side is a list of general properties.

Many of these properties are read-only and only change when you work with the presentation. For example, the file size and the number of slides will change as you make edits to your slides. Other properties can be set manually. For example, click next to Title Property to type in a new title for the presentation. It is important to recognize that all of these properties provide information about the presentation, but don't actually appear in the presentation.

Why do these properties matter? In general, properties make it easier to find presentations, and they also facilitate collaborating. For example, by adding your name as the author, others will be able to see who last edited the presentation. When you make changes to the properties, these are saved with the presentation.

Advanced Properties

There are a number of advanced properties in addition to the ones shown by default on the Info panel. For example, click on Properties and select Advanced Properties. This brings up a dialog with several tabs. These contain all kinds of details, such as the number of words and the fonts used.

You can also create your own custom properties. These types of properties typically become important when there are a large number of presentations used by multiple people in an organization. If you have a handful of presentations for your personal use, these advanced properties are not as important. Close the dialog to return to the Info panel.
