Like all students, those with special needs can benefit tremendously from ice breakers that help them get to know each other. This lesson offers activities and games for use in the special education classroom.

Ice Breakers Make a Difference

Are you interested in helping your students with special needs feel better about themselves and get to know one another? One thing that can really help is incorporating ice breakers into your instruction. Ice breakers are activities and games that help make a community more comfortable. They are often fun, but their main purpose is to help people express themselves and get to know each other.

Many students with special needs might struggle with self esteem and verbal communication. Ice breakers can be particularly helpful to these students, who are not comfortable introducing themselves in traditional or linear ways. At the same time, it's important to remember that no two special education students are exactly alike, so when you choose ice breakers, think about what the students in front of you need, will enjoy, and will learn the most from.

Ice Breakers Games

The games in this section are fun and engaging for students. They allow students to be active and laugh together, all the while getting to know themselves and each other better.

A Cold Wind Blows

This game is great for helping special education students introduce themselves, pay attention to each other, and get a little exercise. You can play in a gym or outdoor area. Have all of your students start on one side of your space/room. Then, call out sentences like 'A cold wind blows for anybody who...'
