India is a country in Asia with a rich history and culture. In this lesson, explore the traditions of India, the biodiversity of the land, and the culture of people who live in this unique country.

Where Is India?

Let's travel to south Asia, where we will find the country of India! Part of India is a peninsula, meaning it is surrounded on three sides by water. The Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal border the peninsula part of India. To the north you will find the Himalayan mountains, the tallest mountain range in the world! Two of the most important parts of the geography and history of India are the famous Ganges and Indus Rivers. More about that later!

Map of India

India is bordered by Pakistan, China, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The capital city of India is New Delhi. Over one billion (yes, billion!) people live in India, making it one of the most populated countries in the world!

The geography of India is very diverse. Many areas are coastal due to this part of the country's peninsula formation. Many animals find home in the waters surrounding India, including sharks and dolphins. In the mountain areas of the country, animals such as the snow leopard, bears and tigers can be found.

Ancient History of India

Remember the Indus River? It's important because it is where the first Indian civilization began nearly 5,000 years ago! Cities with buildings and pretty cool inventions were created, but then these eventually disappeared.

A group of people called the Aryans came to live in India years later. They spoke a language called Sanskrit, which is one of the oldest languages in the world. The Indian area became very populated, and throughout the years many dynasties ruled areas within the country. A dynasty is a ruling family that is in charge of an area for many years.

India was controlled by Britain beginning in the middle 1700s. Many native Indians were unhappy with this, and there were rebellions against the British. A famous man named Mahatma Gandhi encouraged peaceful protests in the early 1900s. By 1947, India was free from British control.

Mahatma Gandhi did not believe in violence towards the British who controlled India.

Modern History

There have been many interesting events in modern Indian history. Unfortunately, India has been involved in several wars in the 1900s. In fact, in the 1900s India and Pakistan fought each other in three different wars!

After India gained independence from Britain, Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as Prime Minister. In 1966, Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi was elected Prime Minister. She was one of history's famous female leaders and was known for being very outspoken!
