In this lesson, we will discuss ways to integrate curriculum from other subject areas into physical education. We will at look ways to enhance classroom concepts through P.E. activities.

## Kids and Physical Education

For many students, physical education class is the highlight of their day. It is where they can take a break from sitting in a classroom and use their bodies. It allows them to move around, learn to play different kinds of sports, dance, and just be a part of a team all working toward the same goal. Physical education is a unique time in the school day to connect with students in ways that regular classroom teaching cannot. We'll take a few of examples of concepts taught in math and science and see how they can be integrated into PE.

## Graphing Speed

Graphs are an integral part of math and science curriculum. Students are taught to graph motion, speed, weather patterns, money over time, etc. Sometimes it's difficult for students to visualize the graph as it relates to real life. In PE, students can move around in different ways and graph their own motion. They can see for themselves how graphs are a great visual representation of information.

Here's a sample lesson to put this concept of graphing into practice. The students will graph their own speed when completing a course. You can create a simple course with cones to make different intervals. At each interval, the students will do a different action and time each interval. For instance, the students can run, walk, crawl, and do jumping jacks during the intervals.

The purpose of having different types of movement is to create a graph that clearly shows diverse information. The students should get in pairs with a stopwatch, pencil, and handout to record the time for each other. One student would complete the course while the other student would time them with the stopwatch and record the times on the handout. Then they would switch positions, and the timer would run, and the runner would be the timer.
