Jane Austen Lesson Plan

Instructor: Dana Dance-Schissel

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

Jane Austen was a modern woman before the term existed. This lesson plan introduces a detailed video lesson to teach students about the life and work of the author while an activity gives them the opportunity to analyze her life and work.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • list key features of Jane Austen's work
  • outline the life events of Jane Austen
  • describe Jane Austen's inspiration for writing

  • Up to two weeks for independent reading
  • 1 to 1.5 hours for instruction

Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work (e.g., how Shakespeare treats a theme or topic from Ovid or the Bible or how a later author draws on a play by Shakespeare).
