Sight words are words that students should know just by looking at them. This list provides the sight words that students should know at the midway point of the school year, and by the end of Kindergarten.

The Importance of Sight Words

Many Kindergarteners enter school with a limited, or very basic, knowledge of letters and the sounds that these letters make. Making the connection between the letters and their sounds is paramount. In short, developing readers must have a solid grasp of the alphabet and letter sounds to build a solid foundation in the early stages of reading. Students should also be able to distinguish between the appearance of upper and lower case letters. The reinforcement of this concept at the earliest stages of learning to read also supports a strong foundation. Therefore, letter recognition is a foundational skill that supports ongoing reading development.

Sight words are those that can be recognized on sight without the need for sounding out individual consonant and vowel sounds. Learning specific sight words is another important early step in reading and usually begins during the Kindergarten year of elementary education. High frequency sight words are those that are common in early reading materials. Common Core State Standards recommend that Kindergarteners know the high frequency words by sight.

Teaching Sight Words

This plan for teaching sight words divides the school year into two halves in terms of sight word learning goals. The first part of the year should focus on mastery of the simplest of the sight words. Once these have been mastered by students, they can move on to more challenging sight words during the second half of Kindergarten.
