The Earth consists of four unique layers, each with a specific function. Teaching students about these layers need not be daunting. These games and activities were designed to make learning about the layers of the Earth fun and easy.

Layers of the Earth Games and Activities

The crust, mantle, outer core and inner core make up the layers of the Earth. Why not use engaging activities and games to teach students about these layers? These ideas were created with you and your students in mind.

Bake the Layers of the Earth Activity

The four layers of the Earth could be compared to a four-layer cake. This activity builds upon this idea.

Materials

  • Four 8 inch round cake pans
  • Prepared cake batter
  • Four mixing bowls
  • Large wooden spoons
  • Brown, red, orange, and yellow food coloring
  • Access to an oven or microwave
  • Cake plate
  • Prepared cake frosting
  • Knife
  • Paper plate

Instructions

  1. Divide the students into four groups.
  2. Divide the cake batter among the four mixing bowls and give each group one bowl.
  3. Give each group a wooden spoon and one of the four colors of food coloring.
  4. Instruct the groups to add several drops of food coloring to their cake batter to tint the batter, stirring the mixture until well blended.
  5. Pass out the cake pans, one per group.
  6. Have the groups pour their batter into the pans.
  7. Place the filled cake pans in the oven and bake according to the recipe.
  8. Remove the cakes from the oven when fully baked and allow to cool.
  9. When the cakes have cooled, assist students in stacking the layers on the cake plate, spreading a thin layer of the packaged cake frosting in between each layer.
  10. Slice the cake into slivers, one for each student, and place them side up on the paper plates.
  11. Using the cake layers as a visual, describe the different layers of the Earth, along with the characteristics of each, to the class.
  12. Finally, allow the students to eat their slice of Earth layer cake!
