Life Cycle of a Frog Project Ideas

Instructor: Christopher Muscato

There are many ways to tackle the topic of frog life cycles. These project ideas can give your students some unique and creative outlets for exploring and researching this subject.

The Life Cycle of a Frog

Frogs have a unique life cycle, and one that most students have some basic familiarity with. This means that this can be a great introduction into deeper scientific concepts of life/reproductive cycles, evolution, ecology, and biology. The following project ideas are designed to be easily adaptable for students of different grade levels, from those first learning about frogs to students in more advanced classes.

Models and Posters

This project can be completed as a model, diorama, or poster depending on available time/resources and artistic creativity of your students. In all cases, students will research the life cycle and ecosystems of a specific species of frog. They will then create a model/diorama/poster that displays this frog within its natural habitat, in all of the stages of its life cycle. To expand on this, ask students to add predators (or signs of predators like footprints) as well as food sources for this species of frog.

  • For a poster project, ask students to draw a naturalistic scene of the frog/eggs/tadpoles in their ecosystem and to label the various elements.
  • For a model, consider asking students to create a basic terrarium-style ecosystem in a glass bowl, and make the frogs out of modeling clay or paper cutouts.
  • For a diorama, students can use an empty shoebox to create a scene and fill it with painted clay models or paper cutouts.

Give students time to create their scenes and present them to the class.
