Lighthouses Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

What do your students know about lighthouses? This lesson plan uses a text lesson to explain the purpose and function of lighthouses to students. A choice of activities places students in the role of lighthouse designer.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and function of lighthouses
  • Discuss the history of lighthouses
  • List key parts of lighthouses

Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

  • Assorted photographs of lighthouses
  • Paper copies of the text lesson Lighthouses Lesson for Kids: History & Facts for each student
  • A worksheet created using the quiz from the associated text lesson
  • White craft paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Modeling clay
  • Plastic utensils
  • Paper plates
  • Acrylic paints
  • Paintbrushes
