Linear Systems Activities

Instructor: Clio Stearns

Clio has taught education courses at the college level and has a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction.

As a high school algebra, trigonometry, or calculus teacher, you might spend some time teaching your students about linear systems. This lesson offers some activities that will help you enliven your instruction.

Teaching Linear Systems

A linear system is a mathematical way of modeling any system that uses a linear operator. When you are teaching students about linear systems, you will rely on some understanding of algebra and basic calculus; students will need to understand what a function is as well as how integrals work.

Understanding linear systems is complex, but it gives students an important opportunity to determine the connection between mathematical modeling and some real things in the world around them. As you teach linear systems, you might benefit from having some activities you can incorporate into your instruction.

The activities in this lesson give students a chance to learn about linear systems actively and from a variety of vantage points.

Visual Activities

Here, you will find activities that allow students to work from visual modalities to develop their comprehension of linear systems.

Poster of a Deterministic System

One of the simplest kinds of linear systems for students to learn about is called a deterministic system, which maps an input and an output. Have students work in small groups or partners for this activity.
