Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

  • Review action verbs with students and ask them to stand up.
  • Tell them you're going to say a verb and they should perform the action. For example, if you say 'jump' students should jump.
  • Do several rounds of action verbs, then say a linking verb such as 'is.'
  • As students realize they can't 'is,' ask:
    • What type of verb is 'is?'
  • Tell students this is considered a linking verb. Write this on chart paper along with a definition.

Floor Sort

  • Divide students into partner pairs and give each two pieces of string about a foot long each.
  • Also give the pair a set of prepared index cards.
  • Have students find a space on the floor and make a t-chart with their string. Label one side 'Action Verb' and the other 'Linking Verb' using index cards.
  • Students should now read each card and determine if it is an action or linking verb and place in the correct column.
  • Have groups check one another's work.
