Listening Comprehension Activities

Instructor: Kerry Gray

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

Listening comprehension is an essential communication skill for students to learn. The following activities support teachers in planning lessons related to listening comprehension.

Listening Comprehension

Listening comprehension requires students to take in the auditory signals they hear and make meaning of the words, feelings, context, and connotations of those words. Rather than a passive activity, listening comprehension is an active skill that can be developed with practice. This asset provides listening comprehension activities for students at various grade levels.

Listening Game

Students will actively engage in a fun listening activity.

Grade level: PK -3

Procedure:

  • Remind students of things that good listeners do, such as make eye contact and listen to all instructions.
  • Play a short game with the class in which the teacher offers directions, such as 'Put your hands over your eyes' or 'Wiggle your shoulders.'
  • Play a second game with a student leader so that you can model good listening skills and metacognitively discuss your processes while listening to instructions.
  • Divide students into small groups to play the game so that each person has an opportunity to be the leader.
  • Reconvene as a large group to discuss the things students did to improve their listening skills, as well as things that led to mistakes.

Listening Art

Students will use listening comprehension skills to draw a simple picture based on the oral directions of a peer.

Grade level: 3rd - 12th

Materials:

  • drawing paper
  • colored pencils
