Literature circles can be a wonderful way to get students of all ages talking and thinking deeply about books. This lesson provides an example of a response form students can use during and after a literature circle.

Using a Literature Circle Response Form

Are your students involved in literature circles? If so, then you know that these can be a fabulous way to get students engaged in collaborative work while they develop their reading comprehension skills. While there are many different approaches to literature circles, they always involve students working together to make both concrete and inferential sense of something they have all read. A literature circle can develop students' critical thinking skills, as well as their overall enjoyment of a text.

One thing you might want to do if your students are working in literature circles is to use response forms to help them reflect on the experience. When students use individual response forms during or after literature circles, they develop their metacognitive awareness, and thus really focus on what they are learning or thinking as a result of this kind of instruction. The response form offered here can be modified to meet the needs of your specific students and the kinds of texts they are working within their literature circles.

Literature Circle Response Form

Part One

This part of your form should be completed over the course of your literature circle meeting.

  • Jot down two or three surprising things that other students in your literature circle say about the book you're reading. You don't have to write in complete sentences.
  • Write down the page numbers you and your group mates reference each time you look back directly to the text. By the end of your meeting, you should have at least five different page numbers on this list.
  • Keep track of any questions or ideas you have while others are talking, so that you don't have to interrupt, but also so you don't forget what you wanted to say!

This part of your form should be completed once your literature circle meeting is over.
