Looking for a Job Online & In Person: Strategies & Best Practices

When one is looking for a job online or in person, it is important to review job postings carefully and present yourself well. Study the strategies and best practices for job hunting, and examine cautions to keep in mind when job hunting in person or online. Updated: 01/20/2022

In-Person Job Hunting

Before the Internet became so prevalent, people would find jobs in person by visiting different companies. You could walk into a store that displayed a help wanted sign and speak to the manager right away.

Fast-forward to today and much has changed. Now, a job seeker will probably be given an application to fill out, be asked for a resume, and be requested to email the completed application to the hiring manager.

Often there is a telephone interview first, and an in-person interview if you make it to the next step. For the interview, you'll need to dress the part. Don't wear informal or overly casual clothes, as your clothes need to show you're serious about the job as well as your professionalism. For example, you wouldn't wear a t-shirt and shorts to an interview at a legal firm. No, you'd come to the interview dressed up in your best business suit in order to make a good first impression. During the interview, remember to speak using professional words instead of slang terms, which are informal words used in everyday, casual speech.

After the interview, follow up via email or letter with a note expressing your interest in the company, and your appreciation for their time spent with you.

Online Job Hunting

A more common way of finding a job in today's world is via the Internet. Increasingly more job seekers are finding work through social media, company websites, or through online job boards. An online job board is a site where employers can post jobs and job seekers can find these jobs. Examples of online job boards include Indeed.com, Monster.com, and Flexjobs.com. Some are free to use while others require a fee. Flexjobs.com, for example, asks job seekers to pay a fee to use its service. Indeed.com and Monster.com are free to use for job seekers. By searching for jobs online, you are actually expanding the number of potential companies you can reach. Additionally, it's now easier to find a job in a different state or country via the Internet.

To find a job through an online job board or company website, you'll need to sift through many job postings to find some that suit you. Searches could be catalogued by job type, location, or date of listing. You should carefully follow the instructions for submitting your resume and your qualifications; some companies might ask for a cover letter or for references in addition to your resume. To be noticed, you'll need an excellent resume that highlights your qualifications, showing you are a perfect fit for the job. Many times, the hiring manager will receive hundreds of applications for the same job, so highlighting the skills you have that are beneficial to the particular position you are seeking shows your potential employer that you have done your research and that you are capable of doing the job.

Another way to use the Internet to find work is by posting your resume on your own site, on online job boards, and on your social media accounts. Hiring managers often look at social media accounts to find the right candidate. So if you present yourself as a professional in your field on your social media account, this can lead to a job offer. For example, LinkedIn is a site which offers users the ability to post their resumes, work history, and experience. Done well, your LinkedIn profile could lead to job opportunities. LinkedIn is also a great way to network with other professionals.

When searching online for a job, you may encounter different forms of interviews. Some companies may ask that you physically come in for the interview, others may conduct a phone interview, and still others may arrange a video interview using Skype or a similar video chat program. In any instance, remember to speak professionally for the interview and if it's a video, wear professional clothes just as you would for an in-person interview.

With online job hunting, follow up after interviews in the same manner as you would for in-person job searches.


You do have to be careful when job-hunting online, because as you look through the listings you'll sometimes find a scam. These scams will often lure you in with promise of a high salary for minimal work. Scams can be job postings that ask for your personal information and promise a big paycheck. But in the end, you lose out as they often pay you with a fake check and/or steal your personal information. To prevent this, research the hiring company to make sure they are legitimate.
