Lord of the Flies Chapter 9 Questions

Instructor: Jason Lineberger

Jason has 20 years of education experience including 14 years of teaching college literature.

If you're teaching Lord of the Flies in your English class, then you've come to the right place! Here are discussion questions for Chapter 9, broken down by level of thinking.

Levels of Thinking

Grouping questions by level of thought helps teachers be more systematic in their questioning. This lesson uses Bloom's Revised Taxonomy to set up a series of questions that takes students from basic recall through to higher levels of questioning, such as application, evaluation, and analysis.

Level 1 - Remember

  • How does Simon react when he finds the body of the dead soldier attached to the parachute?
  • When it starts to rain at the feast, Ralph wants to know how Jack plans to handle the weather. What is Jack's response to Ralph's question?
  • These lines appear towards the end of the chapter: ''The circle became a horseshoe. A thing was crawling out of the forest...The beast stumbled into the horseshoe.'' The boys think the figure stumbling into their group is the beast. Who is it really?

Level 2 - Understand

  • The boys have killed and roasted a pig, and they have a feast to celebrate. Describe Jack's physical appearance at this feast.
  • Explain the sequence of events that leads to Simon's death.
  • What happens to the evidence of murder at the end of the chapter?
