Teach your students about artist Rene Magritte. After reviewing concepts of surrealism, students will read a text lesson giving a biography of Magritte and his evolution as an artist then analyze his work and give his techniques a try.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define and explain surrealism
  • describe and analyze Rene Magritte's art

Warm Up & Review

  • Review concepts of surrealism by showing the lesson What is Surrealism? - Definition, Art & Characteristics.
  • Ask students to speak in small groups identifying characteristics of surrealism, then discuss:
    • What do you like about surrealism?
    • What is the relationship between WWI and surrealism?
    • Which characteristics about surrealism do you like most?
  • Share a few images by Magritte and analyze with students, discussing content and technique.
