What do manatees look like? Where do they live? What do they eat? How do they grow? This lesson will answer all of these questions and teach you lots of fun facts about manatees!

What are Manatees?

Manny is a young manatee who lives in the sea. He is lonely and is in search of some other ocean friends. His new friends ask lots of questions about him to make sure that he will be a good playmate. Join Manny as he describes himself, his life and tries to make new friends!

Timmy the sea turtle asks what manatees look like because he's not sure if they look like sharks or not. Manny answers that manatees are large mammals. Mammals are animals that have hair and give birth to live babies. Manatees are huge and can weigh as much as 1,000 pounds! Don't worry, though; manatees are gentle animals and don't have the same top fin as sharks. They have a big tail that helps them swim and big flippers that help them turn.

Where Do Manatees Live?

Timmy the sea turtle lives in warm sea water and wants to make sure Manny will be close by to play. Lucky for Timmy, Manny the manatee does live in warm ocean water near the equator. The equator is an imaginary line that separates the northern half of the world from the southern half. Some of Manny's relatives don't live in the ocean, though; they live in bays and rivers. Manatees can be found from Florida to Brazil, as well as along the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Some are also in Africa.

What Do Manatees Eat?

Sammy the starfish is worried that Manny will think of him as a snack! Don't worry, Sammy, manatees are herbivores. This means that they are vegetarians and only eat plants. Manny loves to eat water plants and grasses. He has a huge upper lip that helps him grab his food, and his strong teeth help him chew and grind his food. He won't ever eat his ocean animal friends!
