Marine Biome Project Ideas

Instructor: Maria Airth

Maria has a Doctorate of Education and over 15 years of experience teaching psychology and math related courses at the university level.

Covering 70% of the Earth's service, our marine biomes are extremely important. These projects will help your students get engaged in the process of learning about the marine biomes of the world.

Why Marine Biomes?

The marine biome is the largest biome. It covers approximately 70% of the Earth. For students to really gain an understanding of this massive and important biome, they need to be actively engaged in the learning process. This lesson offers projects suitable for upper elementary students on the topic of marine biomes. These projects are recommended for use after a traditional classroom study of marine biomes.

Sing It

Divide your class into groups of two or three and instruct each group to create a song to teach to younger children about marine biomes. The song can be within any genre (rap, pop rock, country), but must share facts about the biome.

Songs should include:

  • Basic facts about the size of the marine biome
  • Basic facts about the three zones of the marine biome
  • Types of animals found
  • Types of plants found

The song should be 1-2 minutes in length and all members of the group must participate in the performance of the song. Allow time for the groups to sing their songs to the class. You may consider having a class vote on the best song (and you may consider working with the teacher of a group of younger students and having your students teach them this song).
