'Marley & Me' is an autobiographical novel by John Grogan about his family and their dog. This resource provides discussion questions for a novel study about this book.

What part do your pets play in your life and your family? John Grogan's Marley & Me enables the author to pay tribute to an important dog in his life. Students will be able to examine their own relationships and how flaws contribute to lovability. The following questions will help your high school students better comprehend this text.

Chapter 1-10

In this section, the Grogan family is introduced. Students will discuss the initial adjustment period as Marley becomes part of their family.

  • Why do the Grogans decide to add Marley to their family? What are other reasons people choose to get a pet? What are some things you should consider before getting a pet?
  • How is Marley's name chosen? How does the name reflect the owners? Why are names important? What would you name a pet? Why?
  • What is the difference between English and American Labrador breeds? How would this information have helped the Grogans when choosing their dog? Why is it important to do some research before making a major life change?
  • How does Marley adjust to the Grogans in the first few weeks? What are some ways the Grogans have to adjust to Marley? What would happen if only one of them made changes? Explain your answer.
  • What are some ways Marley supports and protects the Grogans? In your opinion, does this make up for the difficulties Marley causes? Explain your answer.
  • Why is Marley unsuccessful in obedience school? What are some things the Grogans do to improve Marley's behavior? What else do you think they could do?
