Practice makes perfect...or at least better! Grab a pen and paper, and practice matching nouns with their definite article sidekicks - el, la, los, and las - in this video.

Matching Articles and Nouns: Spanish Language Practice

El. La. Los. Las. These four definite articles all mean 'the,' depending on gender and number. Today we're going to practice matching them with the nouns they modify. Generally speaking, the ending 'o' denotes a masculine noun, and the 'a' ending denotes a feminine noun, but let's take a moment to highlight some of the rules and hints that will help us match them correctly. Remember that most of the time:

  1. Nouns that end in -s are masculine (el país).
  2. Nouns that end in -or are masculine (el profesor)
  3. Words that end in -ma break the -a rule. (el problema).
  4. Nouns that end in -ción and -dad are feminine (la lección, la comunidad).
  5. Nouns that end in -ora are feminine (la profesora).

And don't forget that there are nouns that don't follow the rules and have to be memorized, like 'la mano.'
