The Math Problem

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 30% of Americans would rather clean a bathroom than solve a math problem. Considering this statistic, it is not surprising that the United States is ranked 24th in math scores worldwide. Many people have an aversion to math because they claim they don't understand it or it's ''hard''. The fact is, these conceptions about math are formed in early childhood and are carried for the rest of a person's life. This makes it crucial that teachers intervene in elementary school when students struggle with math. Keep reading to learn about ten elementary math interventions.


An intervention is a deliberate program or process that is designed to aid a child in an area where he or she struggles. Interventions should be put into place as soon as a possible for maximum results.

Free Intervention Strategies

Peer tutoring involves a high-level student working with a lower level student. This allows the student in need to discuss math topics one-on-one. This is great for students who are shy about asking questions in whole class discussions. It also allows the student to receive immediate feedback. This is helpful in avoiding confusion and prolonging incorrect thinking. Before a peer tutoring activity, the teacher should model and communicate expectations during this activity. This intervention is suitable for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Keyword mnemonics help students remember new vocabulary words. It works by connecting new vocabulary with previous knowledge. New words are introduced with familiar words that sound like the new word. The student is then asked to create a sentence with the new word.
