You know the megalodon was a giant prehistoric shark, but you want to know so much more! Where did it live? What did it eat? This lesson will answer these questions and teach you lots more about these amazing animals!

What Were Megalodons?

Marvin the megalodon was a giant prehistoric shark. Prehistoric means very, very old, or from a time before history was written down. People think that megalodons lived from about 28 million years ago until about 1.5 million years ago, when they became extinct. There are still large sharks today, but nobody is exactly like Marvin the megalodon.

Marvin was about 50-60 feet long and had huge, sharp teeth that were as big as a man's hand.

Their huge size means that the megalodon is thought to be the biggest shark that ever existed- longer than a school bus!

Where Did Megalodons Live?

Megalodons lived in oceans all over the world. Many scientists believe that megalodons became extinct because their ocean habitat changed. When megalodons lived, oceans were much warmer and weather did not change very much. Scientists believe that changing weather caused megalodons to die out because their bodies could not stay warm enough in the cold water.

What Did Megalodons Eat?

Megalodons were carnivores. Carnivores are animals that only eat meat. Marvin and his shark friends used their sharp teeth to eat whales. Their teeth helped tear the whales into chunks, which the megalodons ate whole. Megalodons had huge jaws that were wide enough for a grown man to stand inside!

Megalodons were so huge and hungry that they may have eaten as much as 1300-2700 pounds of food each day. That's almost about as much as a car weighs!
