Rachel has worked with several businesses developing policies on customer experience and administration.

In this lesson, we will discuss the different types of mentoring available in the workplace. We will also discuss the skills required to be a good mentor.

Mentors: The Key to Success

An excellent example of a great mentor/mentee relationship is between Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs. Zuckerberg is successful in his own right, but he also realizes the value that a mentor can provide to an individual or business. Zuckerberg relied on Steve Jobs to inspire and mentor him. He asked Jobs a lot of questions and learned from him to help build a team that carried the same focus and drive. Jobs and Zuckerberg had similar ideals in that they wanted to create something more than just a business; they wanted to help change people's lives.

By definition, a mentor is someone with experience, knowledge, and skills in a particular area that is willing, capable, and available to contribute his time to develop and support another person to help him succeed. A good mentor will help you become the best version of you. They will question you, challenge you, and help you.

Types of Mentoring

There are two different forms that mentoring can take.

  • Developmental Mentoring is a form of mentoring where the mentor helps to develop the mentee. Developing employees into leaders is done at a rapid pace these days, so companies rely on mentors to help develop leaders in a big way. Companies no longer have the time to wait for someone to get up to speed. They rely heavily on mentors to take someone under their wing and help develop the skills that will make an employee successful. Developmental mentors utilize their skills and education to help develop another person.
  • Sponsorship Mentoring is a form of mentoring in which an individual or company uses their influence to deliberately help others advance. To sponsor someone is very similar to developing someone, in that both assist their mentees in advancement in the workplace and identifying opportunities to grow. Sponsorship mentors utilize their skills and connections to create opportunities to support a mentee.
