Michelle Obama is an inspiration to many people. She is highly educated and has had many important jobs, one being the First Lady of the United States of America. Read all about her life in this lesson.

Early Life

Way before Michelle Obama was the First Lady of the United States of America, she was the daughter of Fraser and Marian Robinson. She was born January 17, 1964, and given the name Michelle LaVaughn Robinson. Michelle grew up in Chicago in a small, two-story house with her mother, father, and brother, Craig.

Most kids who are 4 years old are just learning to write their names and identify letters of the alphabet, but Michelle Obama was already reading! She was a gifted young lady! She skipped the second grade and later attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, a high school for gifted children, where she was the salutatorian for her graduating class in 1981.

College & Career

Michelle was an Ivy League scholar, which means she excelled at some of the country's best colleges. She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a minor in African American studies. In 1988, she graduated from Harvard Law School. She landed a job at a law firm in Chicago, where she eventually met Barack Obama.

Before she was the First Lady, she held many important jobs. In 1991, she worked as the assistant to Mayor Richard Daley in Chicago. She also became the assistant commissioner of planning and development in Chicago.

In 1993, Michelle got a job as the executive director for the Chicago office of Public Allies, where she helped young adults develop the skills needed to obtain a job in public service. She was also an associate dean of student services for the University of Chicago.

In 2002, she worked as the executive director for community relations and external affairs for the University of Chicago Hospitals. Michelle's career list is quite impressive!

Family Life

In 1988, Michelle was chosen to mentor a summer intern while working at the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin. That summer intern was none other than the future 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Michelle and Barack married on October 3, 1992. She became a mother in 1998 when her daughter Malia Ann Obama was born. She has another daughter, Natasha 'Sasha' Obama, who was born in 2001.

Michelle has a great relationship with her mother, who also lives at the White House. Her father died from health problems associated with multiple sclerosis in 1991.
