Middle School Choir Activities

Instructor: John Hamilton

Middle school choir gives talented students a venue for singing with other like-minded individuals. These eight activities will instill teamwork, and provide your choral students with hands-on methods of improving their skills.

Teaching Middle School Choir

Being a middle school choir teacher presents special challenges, as you are dealing with so many singers of various levels of singing abilities. In addition to teaching musical qualities such as pitch, rhythm, and timing, you must also teach social skills such as a sense of teamwork and cooperation. Your middle schoolers will enjoy these eight activities that will instill those very attributes.

Say the Syllable Game

In this game, your students will stand in a row beside one another. Then you will give them a sentence such as 'I really like to sing in middle school choir.' Starting at one end of the row, the first student says 'I', and the next student says the first syllable in the word 'really.' This continues until someone says the word 'choir'. After this last word, the next student doesn't speak but touches their shoulders instead. Then the process repeats itself. If someone makes an error or is too slow or fast, they are eliminated. You can later speed up the process to make it tougher. You can also add foot stomps, hand claps, and so forth to increase the difficulty. The last student standing is the winner. This will teach many important musical concepts, including concentration, rhythm, and timing. Expect your students to want to play again and again.
