What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being conscious of the current environment and the present moment. In the busy culture we live in, it's easy to get caught up in what is going to happen or future plans. Other people struggle to move on from the past and are stuck re-living painful memories or times that have passed. As a result, it can be easy to lose touch with the present time. Mindfulness is the conscious effort of being involved in the present - in recognizing and honoring your feelings, the sensations in your body, and the events happening around you.

How Are Mindfulness Exercises Effective for Children?

Children suffer from stress, anxiety, and over-stimulation as much as adults do. Unfortunately, they do not have the cognitive skills to handle the emotional upsets that are common in our lives. By using mindfulness exercises, children can learn to relax, be calm, and focus their thoughts and energy. This can help them feel more empowered, confident, and able to withstand overwhelming situations.

In the classroom, mindfulness exercises are beneficial in helping children develop focus and a longer attention span, as well as managing their thoughts. You can use mindfulness exercises throughout the school day when students feel burnt out or are having a hard time focusing on a lesson. These activities can be quick, yet effective.
