Instructor: Kristen Goode

Kristen has worked in Elementary Education since 1993 - both as a classroom teacher and administrator. She holds a doctorate in Education Leadership.

The mighty monarch butterfly is well known for its annual migration toward Mexico each winter. Teaching students both about this exciting process as well as the full life cycle of a butterfly can be a fun and interesting unit of study.

Monarch Migration

To make the migration of the monarch butterfly really come to life for students, teachers can use various activities that target different learning modalities and skills. The following activities, intended primarily for elementary age students, have been designed to develop skills and deepen student understanding of the monarch butterfly and its annual migration south.

Map Their Route

When studying monarch migration, we learn that the butterflies living in the western United States migrate toward the coast of southern California. while those that live in the rest of the Unites States and Canada head south to the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. Use this activity along with some geography skills to map out their route.

Materials: copies of a blank map of North America (with states and countries outlined but not labeled), regular map of North America, markers or colored pencils, writing paper, pencils
