Months of the Year in Spanish Activities & Games

Instructor: Yolanda Reinoso Barzallo

Yolanda holds a CELTA Cambridge, a Juris Doctorate, and a Master of Public Administration. She is a published author of fiction in Spanish.

This lesson describes games and activities that put months of the year in context so students can use them in a practical manner. The activities require getting students to use the months while playing/practicing.

Oral and Visual Presentation

You can make vocabulary classes fun from the beginning if you introduce new words in an oral manner. Students will be challenged to learn to pronounce by imitating you and will be memorizing the new words at the same time! You can have the words meses del año (MEH-sehs dehl AH-nyo) on the board to introduce the topic. As you know, this means 'months of the year'. Ask your students to pronounce the lesson topic first.

Next, introduce each month with its pronunciation and ask a few students to repeat after you. Once they have the pronunciation down, you can write the month on the board. Before moving on to the next month, it is a good idea to get the entire class to say the month aloud. This solidifies the knowledge about each new word you teach.

To finalize, you can ask students to try saying all the months in correct order. Once students have knowledge of all the months of the year you can go on to teach the needed context for the activities below. Context is very relevant to vocabulary because loose words do not stick well without a practical context.
