Mosaics Lesson Plan

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

Do you need an engaging method for teaching your students about the history of mosaic art? This lesson plan uses a text lesson to explain critical facts about this art form while summarizing the history of its use. An activity challenges students to reinterpret a classic mosaic.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • explain what a mosaic is
  • list the key steps for creating a mosaic
  • summarize the history of mosaic art

  • Several photographs of well-known mosaics from around the world
  • Paper copies of the text lesson What is Mosaic Art? - History & Design
  • A worksheet created using the quiz from the associated text lesson
  • Heavyweight cardboard cut into 12'x12' squares
  • Markers
  • Adhesive
  • Small tiles, pebbles, shells, and so on
