Emily Bronte's classic story of the unfulfilled passion between working class Heathcliff and upper crust Catherine resonates with readers. The painful and unpredictable intertwining of love, loss, and social standing can be found in many films with a similar tone. This lesson will explore movies like Wuthering Heights.

Tess (1979)

Forbidden love and secrets hover throughout Tess, the film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel, Tess of the d'Urbervilles. An impoverished peasant girl is sent to live with wealthy relatives and quickly faces tough decisions with potentially devastating outcomes. Students will see the glaring similarities between this film and Wuthering Heights in regards to impossible choices, class issues and family struggles.

Emma (1996)

Emma is based on the novel of the same name by Jane Austen. A young woman named Emma Woodhouse dabbles in gossip and matchmaking. She finds some major surprises along the way. Romance, whimsy, and self-discovery present themselves in an irresistible way in this movie. It harkens back to some primary elements of Wuthering Heights and will quickly become a favorite in your classroom.

Tuck Everlasting (2002)

Secrets, social class clashes, and chaotic love present themselves in Disney's Tuck Everlasting. Adolescent Winnie Foster dreams of breaking free from her oppressive mother and finds a possible ticket out by happenstance while lost in a forest. Desire and hard choices run throughout this film, mirroring many of the themes presented in Wuthering Heights.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Pride and Prejudice is a classic novel by Jane Austen. This film adaptation shares the tumultuous love and social class issues featured in Wuthering Heights as the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy unfolds. The Pride and Prejudice film provides an opening for an interesting conversation about similarities and differences to Wuthering Heights.

Twilight (2008)

Impossible love and forbidden romance create an unforgettable film in Twilight. This is the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's original novel which tells the story of Bella and Edward. Students will love the vampire element, and comparisons between this enjoyable film and Wuthering Heights will likely emerge.
