Myth Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Teaching your students about myths can be fun and creative with this lesson plan. They will learn about myths by reading and discussing a text lesson and myth of your choice. They will then work in groups to create a myth of their very own.

Objectives

Students who complete this lesson will be able to:

  • Identify and explain the purposes of myths
  • Create their own myth

Curriculum Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1

Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.2

Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.

Materials

  • Class set of copies of What is a Myth - Lesson for Kids
  • Class set of copies of a short myth of your choice
  • Computer
  • Projector
  • Large white paper (enough for each group)
  • Index cards with different topics for myths on them (one topic per card; these should be faced down on a table)
