Use this lesson plan to teach your students about shields used by the Native Americans. A text lesson details the history, types, designs and role these shields played in Native American lives, discussion questions and activities help apply thinking, and a quiz tests understanding.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • describe the history of shields used in Native American society
  • explain the types and uses of shields in Native American society
  • discuss designs and symbolism on Native American shields

Length

50 minutes for lesson, plus time for activity

Materials

  • Copies of the lesson Native American Shields: History & Design, one for each student
  • Images of shields used by Native Americans
  • Tag board or poster board
  • Art supplies (markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc.)
