Natural Environment Lesson Plan

What role does the natural environment play in your life? Check out this lesson plan for engaging ways to teach your students about the different views cultures have on nature.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • identify three specific cultural and religious views about nature
  • compare and contrast different views about nature
  • research a new culture to determine its views about nature
  • describe their own thoughts and beliefs about the natural environment

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.9-10.9

Compare and contrast treatments of the same topic in several primary and secondary sources.

Materials

  • Text lesson How Different Cultures Interact with the Natural Environment
  • Venn Diagrams with three circles
    • Handouts for each student or students could create their own in a notebook
  • References on various cultures (texts or use of computers with Internet)
  • Pictures of things in nature such as water, the sun, woods, etc.
  • Quiz
    • Can be taken online or provided as handouts

Lesson Instructions

  • Show students' pictures of nature. Ask how they interact with these things? Discuss as a class.
  • Have students separate their notebooks into three areas: India, Greenland and 19th Century Western Europe.
  • Guide students through the text lesson, How Different Cultures Interact with the Natural Environment. Having them take notes on each example.
  • Next, have students discuss with a partner the similarities and differences between the three interactions in the environment.
  • Together partners will work on a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the different views from the lesson. Remind students to use facts from their notes and/or the lesson to specify what is the same and what is different in and among the views from India, Greenland, and Western Europe.
  • Help partners as needed.
  • When finished, compile a Venn diagram as a whole class. Try to ensure that each set of partners is contributing.
