Never Let Me Go Discussion Questions

These discussion questions can help your students gain a fuller understanding of the storyline in 'Never Let Me Go'. Students will also be able to explore ideas related to the ethical boundaries of cloning.

Never Let Me Go

'Never Let Me Go' analyzes three main characters whose lives exist for others. Students will have the chance to examine their understanding of the storyline by answering the following discussion questions while intertwining their opinions and experiences.

Characters: Their Main Purpose

  • Kathy
    • What is the difference between a carer and donor? Which role does Kathy have? If you could choose to be one or the other, which one would you choose and why?
    • What is Kathy's life like at Hailsham? Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of this institution as it relates to Kathy.
    • How would you describe Kathy? Does she have the ability to feel emotion? Why or why not. Do you think her disposition serves her best? Explain.
    • What is Kathy's main responsibility to the donors? How does she perform in this position? If you were her supervisor what feedback would you provide and why?
    • What is Kathy's relationship like with Tommy and Ruth? Given the same set of circumstances, would you create a bond with others at Hailsham? Why or why not?
  • Tommy
    • Can you list five characteristics to describe Tommy? Do you identify with Tommy? If so, how?
    • What is Tommy's life like at Hailsham? Hailsham encourages physical fitness and artistic expression; which area does Tommy excel the most?
    • Who is Tommy's love interest in the storyline? How does it develop? Does everyone support their relationship? Explain.
    • What does Kathy lead Tommy to believe as it relates to the terms 'deferment' and 'postponement'. Is this possibility true? Why or why not? Why do you think Kathy shared this ideology with Tommy?
    • Describe Tommy's demise. Did he desire support by his side during this time? Explain.
  • Ruth
    • Would you be friends with Ruth? Why or why not? Identify specific scenes or quotes in the storyline to support your answer.
    • How would you describe Ruth's relationship with Tommy and Kathy? Do you think she's vindictive?
    • How was Ruth perceived at Hailsham? Do you think her persona benefited or hindered her?
    • Why does Ruth ask Kathy for forgiveness? Do you think Ruth deserves this level of understanding? Why or why not? Has anyone asked for your forgiveness? If so, how did you respond?
