A key HR function is ensuring that employees become integrated into the organization and their jobs as efficiently, effectively and quickly as possible. In this lesson, you'll learn about the orientation process, which seeks to achieve this.

Orientation Defined

Nathan works for a tech company in Silicon Valley as a human resource specialist. Nathan is responsible for the development and implementation of his company's new hire orientation program. New hire orientation is the formal process of introducing a new employee to the organization and the first step toward assimilation and the process of employee socialization.

You can think of assimilation as becoming integrated into an organization. Socialization is the process of acquiring the knowledge, values and social skills necessary to conform, or fit in, with the company. Socialization is a crucial part of the assimilation process. Keep in mind that orientation is just the beginning of the socialization and assimilation process. Let's look at how Nathan may go about designing a new hire orientation program.

Design & Content

Nathan knows that at the most basic level orientation needs to provide a broad overview about the company, the employee's job and the employee's work team. It should also clarify what is expected of the employee and what the employee can expect from the organization. Some specific components of orientation include:

  • Overview of how the new employee fits into the overall structure of the organization
  • Overview of organizational policies, rules and procedures
  • Overview of compensation and benefits
  • Overview of the company's culture, including its mission statement, organizational values, and even such things as dress codes and the organization's conventions of etiquette

Let's take a look at an example. Nathan is leading a group of newly hired salespeople through orientation. Nathan has scheduled a full day for orientation. He starts the day off with the new hires completing any necessary paper work, including required government forms, direct deposit forms and election of health benefits.

Nathan then gives a presentation of the company's history, mission, and values. A short break follows. After returning from break, the group spends most of the rest of the morning going over the company's policies, rules and procedures, including the employee's handbook. As the lunch hour approaches, Marvin gives the group a detailed tour of the company's facility, and they end up at the cafeteria for lunch.

After lunch, Nathan takes his group of new salespeople to the sales department. The vice president of the sales department gives the group a presentation on the department. They are also informed about the sales training program each new hire will undergo and the expectations for the training. After the presentation, each new hire is introduced to his or her respective team, and they are given an opportunity to share experiences and socialize for a brief period of time.
