Night Chapter 5 Discussion Questions

Instructor: Grace Pisano

Grace has a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in teaching. She previously taught high school in several states around the country.

'Night' by Elie Wiesel is one of the most-read books in high school classes as students learn about the personal way that the Holocaust changed the way of life for so many people. These discussion questions pair with Chapter 5 in the book.

Chapter 5 Discussion Questions in Night by Elie Wiesel

By Chapter 5, the characters of Night are in the concentration camp and have accepted the reality of life during the Holocaust. We see a wide range of emotions as they go through what should be the happy times surrounding the holidays, but are in fact a time filled with fear and uncertainty. Use these discussion questions after students read the chapter to help them think critically about what they read and connect to the broader themes of the novel.

Analyzing the Plot

  • What do you know about the holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur? How are they traditionally celebrated? How do the people inside Buna honor the days?
  • What is Eliezer's new job in this chapter? How do you think he feels after doing this all day?
  • Although the guards do not really let the prisoners celebrate the holidays, they do recognize the holidays in some ways. How do the guards recognize the days? Based on the way the Jews were treated, does it surprise you that the holidays were even acknowledged.
  • How would you describe the relationship between Eliezer and his father in this chapter?
  • What is mentioned about Dr. Mengele in this chapter? Mengele was a real Nazi doctor during the Holocaust who conducted many inhumane and unethical tests. Read a little bit about his work and discuss how you think someone could get away with something like this.
  • What do they find out about Eliezer's dad? What does the dad tell him in what he thinks might be their final moments together?
  • What did you feel when Eliezer returned home from work and saw that his dad was still there (after he thought he had been selected to be killed)? Although Eliezer and his dad do not always get along, what does it mean to Eliezer to have his father nearby?
  • What happens to Eliezer's foot? What do the Nazis do? What about his experience in the hospital surprises you?
  • What rumor is going through the hospital while Eliezer is there? What do they say the Nazis will do in response to this? Does this surprise you? Why?
  • What do the prisoners have to do before they evacuate? Can you think of any reason why they would be made to do this?
