North American Geography Lesson Plan for Elementary School

It's important for students to have a solid grasp on geography. With this lesson, students will be exposed to the major geographic features of North America and practice identifying the location of those features and how they interact.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Describe the geographic diversity of North America
  • List the names of major geographic features of North America
  • Identify the location of major geographic features of North America on a map

Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.

Materials

  • Printed worksheets with blank maps of North America
  • Printed lesson Geography of North America: Lesson for Kids
  • Printed worksheets Lesson Quiz
  • Pens, pencils, markers, crayons, or other writing utensils for students
  • Optional: Glue, scissors, copies of magazines that contain images of nature, like National Geographic

Lesson Instructions

  • Draw or project a map of North America on the chalkboard/whiteboard, including the borders of the US, Canada, and Mexico
  • Hand out printed worksheets with blank maps of North America
  • Ask students the names of the three countries on the map. Label them on the class map, and have students label them on their own map
