Number Sentence Activities & Games

Instructor: Clio Stearns

Clio has taught education courses at the college level and has a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction.

Learning how to read and solve number sentences is one of the first steps young mathematicians take toward algebra. This lesson offers activities and games that will make number sentences fun.

Learning About Number Sentences

As a math teacher, you probably understand how important it is to help students learn to read and write number sentences. When students understand how a number sentence works, not only are they more familiar with the four basic operations, but they are really taking a big step toward understanding the patterns and relationships they will need as they learn to do algebra.

Although you will give students plenty of opportunities to practice number sentences during lessons and for homework, it can also really help to incorporate activities and games into this aspect of your math instruction. After all, the more you can engage students with a variety of learning styles in active learning, the better a job you will be doing of preparing all of your students for higher and more complicated mathematical tasks.

The activities and games in this lesson are oriented toward helping students learn more about number sentences.
