Teachers, this lesson will confirm students read the book. Additionally, challenge their critical thinking and literary analysis skills with the extension questions.

The Adventures of Annemarie Johansen

  • Who is Annemarie Johansen? How old is she? Use at least five adjectives to describe her.
  • Which group is in power during World War II in the book? What are some of their requirements and rules? Why are they against the Jews?
  • What happened to Annemarie's sister? How does Annemarie handle the tragedy? Do you think her emotions are appropriate, why or why not?
  • What happened to Annemarie's sister's fiancé toward the end of the book?
  • In order for a large group of Jews to gather, what do they have to pretend they are doing? In the book, what are the Johansens, close friends and family actually doing?
  • Mr. Johansen was supposed to give a packages to Henrik. Although Annemarie has no idea what's in the package, what does she decide to do once she realizes the package is still there?
  • What was in the package, and how did it help the Jews? Describe in detail.
  • Annemarie and Ellen are never united at the end of the book. Why do you think this is so?

Setting, Scene and Theme Questions

  • Define setting. Compare and contrast Copenhagen, Denmark before and after World War II.
  • Annemarie faces many adversities in this book. Choose the most significant and explain. How does Annemarie handle these difficulties?
  • Although there is one main heroic event by Annemarie in Number the Stars, discuss an important heroic feat by another character. Why did you choose this event?
  • Family is an important concept in this book. Explain.
  • There are many themes throughout the book, examine the following: good vs. evil and leaders vs. followers.
  • This book has many religious references. Choose one and explain the setting and scene. Do you think religion helped the Jews preserver? Explain.
